Grassroot and Stonescroll's cave

Post by Leanan on Mon Oct 19, 2015 5:55 pm

The cave that houses the Stone Scroll is large and well lit with sunlight streaming through windows in the stone ceiling. The windows are covered with transparent stone, Stonescroll's work of course. In the middle of the best-lit part there is the Stone Scroll, a huge wall of colorful stone with shifting patterns that supposedly contain all the secrets of being. Facing it is a throne-like chair, where Stonescroll sits, eyes closed, body still, his skin gone gray due to the changes in his body.

There are other seats here and there, some placed to view the Scroll, others placed so that they will always catch some beam of light from the high windows. The first seats are for visitors, the second kind are used by Grassroot when she does her sewing. There are some decorations on the walls, bodies shaped out of stone, the work of Stonescroll, made when he still spent some of his time in the world of flesh.

In the very back of the cavern, there is a tunnel that leads to three windowless rooms. The first one is Grassroot's room, where she rests. There is an unusual amount of clothing there, accumulated over the years, as well as a little wooden box containing jewelry, mostly in her favorite metal, copper. The second one Grassroot thinks of as Stonescroll's room, although of course he hasn't been there in a long time. There is the shape of a bed in the stone, but all the furs and bedclothes are long gone. There is a rack of clothing here also, and another jewelry box, from which Grassroot chooses things to dress Stonescroll in. The third room is a kitchen, with a fire pit and a chimney that takes the smoke high up and out of the mountain. There Grassroot cooks her meals and prepares the special draught that nourishes Stonescroll and keeps him healthy.

Re: Grassroot and Stonescroll's cave

Grassroot sat in a softly cushioned chair that was illuminated by one of the skylights in the ceiling. She had her legs bent under her body comfortably and in her hands there was a length of pink fabric that was turning into a wonderful wide dress, stitch by stitch. There was no hurry - what Grassroot had was time. She was in a strange mood today. Something interesting would happen. She could tell it from the pace the patterns changed in the Stone Scroll. She did not understand the patterns the way those did who came in and sat for a day or three, submitting themselves into the visions, because if she went into the world of visions that deep, she might never find her way out, and who then would look after the elf called Stonescroll?

But living with him had taught her to sense some basic things from the Scroll, and today it promised something unusual.

Stonescroll knew what was coming, and he put it into the Scroll with the confusion of his feelings. Shapes of animals, of strangers, of stories coming to life. In the stone of the Scroll, many paths and colors came to form a unity, a shared dream, a whisper of tomorrow's promises. But as always, none of that could be seen on his face. This day Grassroot had dressed him in blue robes, with shiny white pearl earrings on both of his ears.

Frost lead her group of four towards the strange looking cave. They kept silent and were alert to any danger that might approach them. They had been with eight and one elves that left the Go-Back's lodge, moons ago.

Even they, who shunned any form of magic, had felt the disturbance in their souls. It had been... like a calling. Some had said it was the Palace of the High Ones, others had claimed it to be some troll trickery and there had been more theories, some even stranger than the other. No one could tell exactly what it had been.

There had been quarrels in the tribe and in the end eight and one elves had decided to leave the Go-back lodge and travel in the direction they had thought the calling had come from. The journey had been perilous and only four had made it to this place.

"Where are we?", Fox asked in a whisper. Frost shrugged. "I don't know, but there are several paths leading to that opening in the rocks. Some one or something must live here.", she answered in equally hushed tones. She walked further as stealthy as she could, looking around for footprints to tell her more of who  or what inhabited this area. Frost crouched, her fingers traced an outline on the ground. "Elves", Frost said, with a ghost of a smile. Could this be the place they had been looking for?

On the Stone Scroll, shadows walked across the mountain landscape. Stonescroll knew what was coming, and put it in his shapings.

But Grassroot did not even look at the Scroll. Her attention was taken by her sewing thread getting tangled. She sighed and worked to loose the knot with her clever fingers. It was slow work, as pulling too fast could have damaged the fabric. She bit her lip, concentrating on her work. If she had still had her wolfblood, maybe she would have sensed someone coming.

At the head of the group of four, Frost entered the cave. She moved about stealthily, the others following her just as silently. Soft footsteps echoed through the cavetunnel, a cough. Frost halted and glared at Eidar. "Silence!", Frost hissed.

As she had explained earlier, they didn't know how the other elves would react to them, so they would move in quietly and try to find out more about the elves.
Eidar had suggested to wait outside, but Frost and Fox had been against that idea. High Ones knew how long they would have to wait for the elves to come outside!
Eidar had sighed and shrugged his shoulders. "Let's go then, oh impatient ones.", he had mocked.

Now, they were in the cave. The tunnel was dark, but at the end shone a light by which they could see where they were going. Frost moved along the tunnel wall, step by silent step getting closer to where the light was.

Grassroot thought she heard something. A whisper, like the voice of an elf. She listened for a moment, but heard nothing more, and thought it must be just her imagination. Those who knew of this cave usually sent to her, to let her know they were coming. She continued working with the troublesome thread. It was too bad she'd run out of Preserver silk again... it flowed much smoother than the linen thread she was now using. Still, it would be a pretty dress when she was done with it. She had the image in her head, of a dress that would float around her when she swirled and turned.

Frost kept herself hidden as well as she could and peeked inside the room. She gasped as she took in what she saw. A scroll seemingly made of living stone, moving in patterns of colours dominated the room.

The room itself looked to Frost to what she tought the Palace of the High Ones looked like. The Scroll itself appeared to the Go-Back as the work of High Ones' magic. So the elf sitting motionless on a throne facing the Scroll, must be... "H-high One?", asked Frost in a whisper, her mouth dry. She felt her heart pounding in her chest.
Behind her, she heard her tribesmate's sounds of awe and wonder. Maybe some of those sounds came from her. She didn't know, nor did she care. To be this close to a High One!

Grassroot could not deny it anymore: someone was there in the tunnel. She sat up and walked with soft footsteps to the doorway that led outside. She gasped when she heard the words 'High One' being spoken. She smiled wryly - Stonescroll did indeed look quite impressive on his throne. She stepped right into the doorway and looked at the small group of elves. She knew none of them, and their clothes were different from those of any she knew. "Welcome to the chamber of the Stone Scroll", she said, her voice quavering a little with nervousness.

Frost stepped forward. The elfess that approached them was unlike to anyone she had ever seen before. It made her slightly nervous, but since the woman did not seem to pose a threat, Forst sheated her sword. "Thank you", she said, looking around to see if there anything that may be a danger to her and her people. It didn't seem so. She tried to relax the hand that had been wavering close to her swordhilt.
She turned to face Grassroot again. She had noticed that the High One had not moved or reacted to their appearance at all. "What is your name?", she asked, "What is this place?" She was curious what was the matter with the High One, he seemed to be... dead? She would get to that question later.

Grassroot smiled. She interpreted, perhaps wrongly, Frost's careful look around as shyness. As a shy elf herself, it was something she found familiar. "I am called Grassroot", she answered, "who are you all and where do you come from?" She was really curious. These newcomers must be what had been showing up in the Scroll.

"It is easier for me to show you than explain in words. Or rather, my friend Stonescroll will be the one doing the showing. Follow me." She turned around and walked to the shimmering stone facade of the Scroll. "See for yourselves."

Stonescroll's magic brought out clear shapes from the swirling colors. It showed sights and scenes from the journey of the newly arrived Go-Backs, things they would find familiar, symbols they might find messages in for themselves. Finally it showed each newcomer the reflection of their own faces, side by side.

"W-wow.." Fox mumbled softly as she watched Stonecroll's magic flow. "How do you do that?" She asked softly.

Stonescroll did not show any sign of having heard the question. He was but dimly aware of what was happening around him, and his dedication to his task prevented him from reacting in the world of flesh. On the scroll, he added an image of Grassroot to stand beside those of the newcomers.

Grassroot noticed that in the Scroll, her own shape was familiar, but she was shown wearing a dress she hadn't worn in centuries. It did not particularly surprise her. Such things were of no importance to Stonescroll. Grassroot spoke: "Stonescroll doesn't talk, or even send much. The scroll is how he communicates with us. As to how he does it, well, it's several kinds of magic combined, as well as complete and utter dedication. He has chosen to live in the world of spirit, and he is able to see things far away, things not yet happened, things that might never happen. I know of no other like him... but legend says there used to be an ever greater Scroll, in the Palace of the High Ones... the story of that is what gave him the idea.

"Legends of the High Ones...", Frost spoke almost muttering. Partly she was talking directly to Grassroot, partly thinking out loud, "But surely you and Stonescroll must be High Ones yourselves?", she asked puzzled about this, "Or at least very close to High Ones for achieving such a miracle."

Grassroot was startled, and a blush crept up her pale cheeks. "We are nothing of the kind. Old, but not that old!" She told them, smiling. "We used to be just like any other plains people. Well, I was. I suppose Stonescroll was rather special to begin with." She stepped closer to the enthroned figure of her friend, and put her hand on top of his, which was resting on the armrest of his chair. "And I found that my calling is to keep the flame of life in his body burning steadily, so that he need not concern himself with food or sleep or other distractions.

Stonescroll did not move or show any sign that he knew Grassroot was touching him. The images of the elves faded from the scroll and it began to show mysterious abstract shapes instead, in all the colors of the Northern Lights.

Fox silently listened to her sister and Grassroot as she watched the images and glanced at Stonescroll. Her eyes were drawn to the images once more abstract shapes came. "What is he showing now? H-have you seen it before?" She tilted her head as she looked at she looked at the shapes.

Her eyes were attracted to the bright lights that changed and she couldn't stop watching. "..it's really beautiful.."

Grassroot glanced at the scroll. Abstract shapes again, it would seem. "Truth to be told, I don't dare to look too carefully at his shapings. One can learn much there, perhaps even the secrets of being... but if one goes in too deep, with soul as well as eyes, one might lose track of time and place. That is one of my tasks here also; to awaken those who have looked too deep." She told them.

The swirling shapes on the scroll now resembled dancing flames. If one looked closer, one might see the flames had arms and legs and heads... if one watched longer, one might recognize something familiar in the dancers, some special movements that identified them as long-lost tribemates.

"Could it be...", Frost mused, "That the High Ones choose to bless your friend with some of their magic?" Perhaps this was the reason they had come here, this Stonescroll, she thought. Using magic was frowned upon as a weakness among Go-Backs, but this must be as close as one could ever hope to get to the true magic of the High Ones. "Wouldn't want to loose something as special as him", Frost told Grassroot, "It's good you take care of him. Perhaps we can help you in your task."

A whisper caught Frost's ear. She turned on her heel to see what had caused it. Eidar stood in front of the scroll, mouth wide open. "It's mother...", he whispered again. Frost shook her head. "Eidar", she tried distracting the hunter from looking to deep into the scroll. Frost too, saw familiar figures among the dancers Stonescroll showed, but she heeded Grassroot's warning. Eidar blinked and turned his head. "Did you see?", he asked. "I did", Frost answered. "Fox", she put a hand on her sister's shoulder, "You be careful too. don't watch to deep nor too long. Magic is not to be trifled with."

Fox was already staring into the colors until her sister placed her hand upon her shoulder. "H-huh?" She frowned, turned her head and looked at Frost.

"R-right.." She mumbled and looked down, trying to resist the urge to look again. 'Just one.. one more glance.' Fox glanced at it, her eyes staring intonthe colours, until she closed them. 'I musn't.'

"I think all magic comes from the High Ones", Grassroot replied to Frost. "As to why they do anything, that is beyond my comprehension. "We are not the only ones living here. Others hunt for us and help in other ways. If you wish to stay, we welcome you with joy." She told them.

She had seen it happen many times, but it never ceased to amaze her. The power of the scroll on those unaccustomed to it was tremendous. "Fear not", she told the young ones, "there is no danger here. But you might want to take your time with the Scroll, not go in deep at once."

As if aware of this, Stonescroll's magic seemed to go dormant again. The flames and dancers receded, and instead, what was shown resembled snowflakes softly twirling as they fell from a darkening sky. A vision of calm... and to some, of home.

"Good", Frost told her sister. She held her shoulder a moment longer, then let go. "Perhaps later, we can go and watch together", she said, "There is much to learn here."

"I think the High Ones guided us here", Frost said to Grassroot, "We will stay. Where can we find the other elves living here? We will talk to them and decided what needs to be done around here. Or are you in need food or water shortly? Then we will provide that right away."
Eidar mumbled a protest about being tired from the long journey, but one stern glance of Frost made him close his mouth.
