Personal History Information:

The story of Stonescroll begins before his birth. His parents were nomadic people with a small amount of wolfblood, without wolf-friends of their own. His mother, Fardreamer, and his father, Chance, had never met each other; they belonged to different family groups that crossed paths only rarely.

One summer night, both of them had a compelling dream, urging them to go to a certain high place, on their own, as soon as they could. Both set forth at once and met each other there under the moons. Eyes met eyes and they Recognized, and succumbed to it willingly. Their two family groups were joined into a small tribe.

Stonescroll was born to loving parents and his first tribe-name was Feather. Soon it was discovered that he had strong magic: both the skill of rockshaping and that of making objects - and elves - float in the air. His people were astonished but grew to appreciate the things he could do for them. Magic was rare among them. Many in that people had green or blue hair, due to a change made by a flesh-shaper generations ago, for reasons now forgotten.

When he discovered his magic, Feather changed his name to Stonetouch. He had a mentor, one who, unlike the rest of the plains nomads, stayed in one place. An old elf, old in a way only a wolf-blooded elf can be, lived in a cave with a pack of wolves. He had no magic himself, but he knew ancient stories and secrets and had met elves of many tribes in his youth. This elder was known simply as 'Old Wolf', though he'd had other names once.

When Stonetouch listened to Old Wolf's stories, another listened also, and watched them both. Old Wolf's great-granddaughter, a little green-haired wisp of a girl called Grassroot, hid in the shadows, thinking her own quiet thoughts.

The seasons turned and Stonetouch grew restless, tired of merely following the grazing herds, wondering about paths that might lead away from the grasslands, into forests and deserts unknown. He had heard of the Palace of the High Ones, and longed to see it. Old Wolf filled his head with stories about the Palace's magic, especially the Scroll of Colors.

One harsh winter, Old Wolf died, of age more than any one ailment. Stonetouch decided it was time to leave. When he told this to his people, Grassroot stepped up and said that she was going with him. She had grown into a lovely maiden, still shy and keeping her thoughts to herself, but sure in the choice of her path. At that time she was the only one on the plains with magic besides Stonetouch. Her magic was a simple 'magic feeling' but she declared it would certainly help Stonetouch find the Palace.

They set forth and journeyed far and wide, until they came to Crossing Paths. Those dwelling there at that time - much fewer than there are now - informed them that the Palace was gone from the world, and its return was uncertain.

Disappointed not to find the Scroll of Colors, Stonetouch became the student of every magic user at Crossing Paths. He had a grand plan for himself and his life, but he trusted his secret with only one person, his faithful friend, Grassroot.

Stonetouch asked her if she would help him in a task that might take  the rest of their lives, binding them to each other. She gave her consent. As part of their task they both had to have a healer remove all traces of wolf blood. Even to that she consented willingly.

The task was this: since Stonetouch could not go to the Scroll, he would BECOME the Scroll. He would make his body still as stone and send out his mind to discover the secrets of being. He sat himself in a chair like a throne, and shaped a thin, blank wall of stone in front of him. On either side of this wall he shaped pillars of stone, which were for decorative purpose only. The magic he did was manifested in the wall itself, and he named both it and himself the Stonescroll.

Stonescroll gave up his senses and movement of his body, in exchange for the freedom of the spirit world. The things he learned in his meditations were displayed in the shifting shapes and colors on the stone wall, but it took the right kind of circumstances and mindset for a watcher to discern their purpose. It was not the real Scroll, but it was the next best thing, was the general opinion.

Grassroot's part of the grand task was different, but no less important. She would tend to Stonescroll's body. He had learned of a  special drink that could sustain his body in its dormant state. Grassroot would prepare this drink for him and pour it into his mouth. She would guard him. And, more for her own pleasure than any need of his, she would change his clothes occasionally, and dress them both in flowy robes of the kind she imagined High Ones would wear. Stonescroll did not particularly care for jewelry, but Grassroot made sure he always wore some, often in the form of sparkly earrings. It was a sisterly little jest she allowed herself. It is not known if he ever noticed.

It is possible for elves to send to Stonescroll, but Grassroot always advises them not to do so unless the need was dire, for it disturbed his thoughts and thus his work. It was very rare for him ever to send back to anyone, and when he did so, the sending came as if from far away.

Stonescroll's eyes are always closed.

He and Grassroot were never livemates or lovemates in the flesh. She tends to him as a mother would an ailing child. She looks up to him as a youngster would her older brother. She guards him with the devotion of a sister-in-all-but-blood.

Fears: Losing Grassroot

Knowledge/Opinion of:
Humans: Dangerous, must be avoided
Trolls: has never met any, will not judge them before that
Preservers: dislikes them
Other Elves: feels distant from them
