Poll on the history of Crossing Paths

Post by Admin on Thu Oct 22, 2015 10:08 pm

We now have 2 versions of a possible history!

1.
Hundreds of years ago, the Palace of the High Ones stayed in one place for a long time. This was at certain location between two continents and two oceans - a narrow isthmus of land. The power of the Palace and those dwelling there was immense, and it left behind traces, in the stone, in the ground, in all of its surroundings.

Certain elves in each tribe, all around the world, were sensitive to this magic. They could sense where the Palace was. Most of them did not know what they were sensing, but some did. Some of them (not only those who knew what the Palace was, but many who did not know, also) set out to travel, alone or with companions, to reach the source of this magic, and some doubtlessly did reach it, before it left the world entirely, but no word of them ever returned to their peoples.

Because the magic had flowed from the Palace so freely, it remained in the place where the Palace had been. And it still caused a pull, a lesser one, that elves could feel. More travellers set forth to reach the Palace. When they arrived they found it gone, and while some returned to their original tribes or continued wandering, many stayed to form a community, either to wait for the return of the Palace, or just because they liked the location - or perhaps they liked someone they'd met there.

Many who did not feel the pull had heard stories of it, enough to lure them to go and see for themselves.

The location - 'Crossing Paths' was also a natural route for anyone who wanted to go from one continent to the other, or from one sea to another. So elves also arrived there just to pass by. Some of these elves also decided to stay there. It was a beautiful place, the elves there came from a wide variety of tribes, there was plenty to eat whether one hunted, fished, or grew plants in a garden.

The pull left behind the Palace can still be felt, so more elves are arriving all the time.

Because the elves come from different backgrounds, some like to dwell in tree dens, some in cave dens, some in huts and so on.

The first one tells a different history then we know of ElfQuest, it could be interesting to use a different timeline then we know! No original (canon) elves have lived in this timeline, so all events will be new! We could even say it is on a different world!

2.
Once they were called Coneheads, but after eons of travelling they had forgotten the name.
They had become immortal and the name simply didn't matter anymore.
Their world was dying when they chose to travel amongst the stars, taking only two small animalspecies with them, the only animals left on their world, and started searching for new worlds to call home.
Once they travelled in groups of travelpods, but now they were alone, looking for their kin they stopped at every new livable world, but found no one.....

A long time passed, longer them they could remember. Under the influence of the magic of the Coneheads and their vessel the animals evolved, changed into sentient beings and became immortal as well.
All was well, at least that was what the Coneheads were thinking..... untill one faithfull day...

Betrayal, confusion and shock, that is what they felt.

In one split second their world had turned upside down.
Only a few days ago they had landed on a young world with two moons. The creatures inhabating this world looked so simular to them, yet so different.
They only lived for a very short time and were called humans.

They decided to stay for a while, but not too long, because this young world was effecting their magic, blocked it somehow.
They changed their travelpod into one of the buildings they had seen across the lands, the humans called it a palace and set it down on a remote piece of land, away from the humans, but close enough to visit them and to learn from them.
They shapechanged themselves to match the legends they had heard of, humans called them elves, and visited the humans. Others like them had lived there, but it had been a long time since the humans had seen them.
It became harder and harder for the Coneheads to return to their original form and use their magic, it was time to leave again!

But in one unorganized moment, the little apelike-helpers  they had taken with them from their dying world, betrayed them! Slayed the ones responsable for time and direction, who, in their desperate moment to prevent disaster, made the unthinkable happen.
The Palace shook uncontroled, shook the ground it stood on and trembled.
Then....nothing...

Still trying to figure what had happend, the elves gathered and walked to the entrance. What would they find?
The elves found themselfes in another time. The Palace had taken them 20,000 years back in time! The world was harsh and didn't let them use their magic to their full potential. They couldn't restore the Palace, couldn't return to the right time, their right form, they were stranded!

They went outside to meet this young world again, only to find the early humans..... agressive, untrusting and feeling threatned by the new arrivals.
One friendly, one hostile, what would happen?

The immortal elves could never have guessed what would happen next....
One blow to the head and a life was taken, an immortal life simply ended right then and there....

They fled to all directions, fled away from their home, from the danger and death.

Several attempts were made to enter the Palace again, but it wasn't untill many winters had come and gone untill a small group was succesfull, but the group was too small.... only 5 of them had stayed to try again, when once there were eight eights times eight had lived and guided their vessel.
Their magic wasn't strong enough to leave the world again, but they were able to take it to safety. They took the Palace and hide it in the mountains up north, mountains covered with snow all of the seasons. No human would venture there!!

The Elves that stayed behind learned immortality was no guaranty for a long life, in their attempt to survive they learned new ways, new meanings of living.

The Palace was gone, but it had stayed in one place long enough to leave a trace of magic in the ground. The trace of magic called the descendants of the first Elves, who had named them High Ones, to this place, some stayed, many left.

Untill one day!
The ground shook again, if you were close to the magical ground you could not blink with your eyes or you would have missed it! In just one brief moment the Palace was there again and gone the next moment. But it was enough!
Where there was once only a wisper of magic, there was now a scream of magic!
But with it was a cry, a cry for help, a cry from another time.....

And the second one is based upon the ElfQuesttimeline. Most events happend like we know, the original (canon) elves are part of some charactes' history, but aren't used here in the Holt. The only exception would be the High Ones!
It is possible this Holt is situated in a time before Cutter and his quest or while he is in wrapstuff!

In both histories, the elves we know aren't playing a role. They will not be used in the rp....!

I would actually prefer a version that fit more or less entirely within canon, but I realise I may be in the minority. Smile I imagine that the second version is like the ElfQuest world we know, except that the palace was moved from its original landing place (Crossing Paths) to the north where the Go-Backs find it later.

So the second version can be set in two times:
1) When Suntop open sends the cry from beyond (heh) or
2) When the High Ones originally arrive and cry out some 10.000 years later

I'd personally suggest the first alternative, because it gives us about 10.000 years to play in before the Call happens (and many of the canon characters are in wrapstuff or in the Sun Village so they won't come bothering us Razz). If we want to make it canon-compliant, that is.

Or have I misunderstood something completely? Very Happy (I'm on my way to bed, really...)

The first is set in an entiraly different time. A different timeline and will have not much to do with the EQtimeline

While the second can be played when we want it. The cry could have been heard on several occations, not just when Suntop/Rayek "send" it out. And it containt most of the EQtimeline.

To clarify. From the crash till the cry 10.000 years passed, then another 10.000 after Rayek steeling the Palace to the furure. So the Palace went 20.000years into the past when the High Ones were betrayeled by the Trolls!

Thanks for the clarification! Good point about the cry/cries, we can play around as much as we want there I suppose. Smile

A clarification of my own, in 2) I was talking about the 10.000 years that pass between Rayek steals the Palace and when it appears for the first (second? Time travel is confusing!) time just before Shards. But like you say, we have 10.000 years before that again too.

I suppose the details of when we actually are can be worked out later - if it even becomes an issue, we may end up with the first version and neatly skip the entire problem. Very Happy

Please read both options carefully. And then vote.
By the end of the week I will discuss the outcome with the moderators and we can then think of a proper timeline.

Thank you for who already have voted!
